The original black-and-white cartoons were traced and colored, frame by frame, in the 1970s. Many people hate the result, and I suppose I do too, but on the other hand I always have a strange fondness for art that is ugly, garish, and cheap.
Marilyn Monroe, with sprained ankle, on the set of RIVER OF NO RETURN. Photos by John Vachon, 1953.
The story of her sprained ankle is a misty one: did she exaggerate the injury just to sabotage production and get back at the producers and director, whom she didn’t get on with? She could be manipulative of course (all models and actors are), though in her case, injuries and made-up stories about poor orphan homes often were a way of gaining some sympathy, something she otherwise very rarely received.
